Youth Workers from Germany about Training Course "Post Truth"
Interview of Mikheil Mtiulishvili after the Training Course.
Can you give us your opinion about the project “Post-truth“? What is the most important thing you have learned during the training?
The Post-Truth Project was an interesting experience for me. The topic was presented in a very structured way including both theoretical and practical parts. The experience enabled me to acquire new skills in area of protecting myself from fake news, I learned to double check the information that I read, I found out about different sites where I can check the source of texts and pictures from an article and verify the authenticity of them. The most important thing I have learned is to use critical thinking each time I interact with sensitive information, I gained a "trust but always double check" perspective.
In your opinion, how can young people deal with propaganda, misinformation and fake news? Do you have your own tips?
As it was demonstrated in the Post-Truth training, propaganda is everywhere, especially in sensitive times, such as wars, or world wide crisis. There will always be parties wanting to influence population to take one side or the other. Therefore it is important not to let ourselves manipulated. It is important to use the critical thinking, before trusting information and more important, before spreading it. My tips for young people would be to verify the source of the articles or information, then to check the images with by reverse check, and last but not least check alternative sources to confirm information. They can start their actions on Google, as it is the biggest search engine with a huge web data base.
How do you plan to share and use your knowledge in your local community?
First of all, I plan to spread this new information that I learned at the Post-truth project in my community. I would like the people to be aware that propaganda and fake news exist in our nowadays life and it is not something that happened in the past. It is real and it impacts our lives. Then, I plan to let them know know how to protect themselves from the propaganda (double check the information, use critical thinking). Last but not least, I will take action whenever I identify a news as being fake or propaganda and stop spreading it.
