Spanish Group about "Welcome Friends"

Aktualisiert: 14. Jan. 2022

Interview of Sara Castilla from Spain after the Training Course "Welcome Friends" in Torremolinos.

Can you give us your opinion about the project "Welcome friends"?

The subject of the project was truly innovating in my opinion, as it helped us discover new aspects of the refugee and immigration issues and enhanced our ability to act as concerned citizens. I personally believe that it is vital to be informed and aware of such essential matters in order to be a part of the much-needed change. I had the opportunity to understand more regarding the way immigrants and the host countries are affected by the immigration issue, as well as for the different methods implemented by EU countries for the integration of immigrants in a foreign country. The facilitators were extremely helpful, open, friendly, attributes which created an environment where I felt safe and welcomed. The hotel was amazing located in the city centre of a lovely town hosting lovely guests. The food was great, and the staff was very helpful as well. To be honest, I think we were all very pleasantly surprised by the facilities compared to our previous Erasmus experiences. The day we spent at the beach was our absolute favourite experience in the program, while we really enjoyed interacting with the locals to raise awareness for the subject of the project. To sum up, the program was one of the best I have attended, the people were incredible, I enhanced my knowledge in a pressing matter and I acquired a wonderful experience abroad.

What can the Eureopean Union do to better protect refugees? or What can Europe do to welcome refugees?

In times where human rights are endangered, all of us are called to act immediately and effectively to protect and preserve humanity. European Union should build a safe space for refugees and immigrants, help them to integrate in their new country and protect them from discrimination, poverty, and exclusion. Everyone deserves the right to education, employment, safety, and a healthy mindset. With the implementation of the right measures, they could integrate and contribute significantly to their host societies in numerous different aspects, such as filling the job market. A standard, fair and not time-consuming process must be established by all the member states of the European Union, followed by appropriate living conditions in each host country to ensure their physical and emotional wellbeing. We should make our societies more welcoming, open-minded and diverse instead of spreading hate and doubts towards people who have truly been suffering in their home countries. European Union should set the example for us, youth, and turn a new page in history.

What will you do at the local level to promote the integration of refugees and migrants in your country? Do you have some suggestions for activities to raise awareness on the topic or measures to take? At a local level, my team and I will raise awareness about refugee and migrants by using our new acquired knowledge from this project through future workshops, social media, and potential projects. We can educate children and young people in schools regarding the current situation and highlight the urgent need to help their smooth integration in our local community. Personally, I think that the best method of integrating refugees into society is language courses and cultural lessons, as you give them the opportunity to truly get in touch with their new host country and enable them to broaden their productivity. Education will always be the most critical asset we have for development. Furthermore, with the help of non-governmental organizations we will take action in promoting activities such as language courses, sports events with both locals and refugees, volunteering in reception camps and assisting in every path that needs to be paved for social change.
